MEXICO’S VIBE IS JUST..
REJUVENATING
By Alissa Mousques
Life passes us by when we stare into our screens. We walk by each other gazing into our phones or other electronic device.
We are distracted by electronics, social media, and our daily routines. I am usually busy with planning my future or thinking about my past. The more I overthink, the more I want to let go of everything.
I create (allow?) excuses for myself, but then I realize that the only thing holding me back from getting stuff done is myself. Too often, I’m my own worst obstacle. Looking to break that cycle, I booked a $200 plane ticket to Mexico!
The vibe in Mexico definitely helps break a rut. Mexico just has a different energy. As I stepped off the airplane, the air hit my face differently. It was warm and comforting.
In a country with much less, I was able to feel so much more. It is such a beautiful country with gorgeous scenery and good food. The people, overwhelmingly, are more connected to nature in Mexico.
I headed to this secluded little town with no more than 70 residents. How did I choose this town? My aunt is one of those 70 residents. Her house is on the edge of a cliff that faces the Pacific Ocean.
After settling in, I sat on her porch and just ingest the chill-yet-revitalizing energy of Mexico. And a stunning sunset helped, as well.
Experiences like this kept happening for the next few days:
Vendors selling homemade jewelry at every street corner.
A Frenchman selling his wood carvings on the beach (I had to wonder: Why did he leave France in the first place?)
Children laughing as they play in the sand; their laughter drowning out the crashing waves behind them.
Then I saw a house built into a tree, with the owner sitting on his porch, having a meal – all while beaming with happiness.
The people and nature share the same energy in Mexico. The simplest pleasures seem to bring so much happiness.
As I disconnected from my normal, daily routine, I realized I was finding so much joy and peace in my heart. Happiness in the way waves crashed onto the sand. Happiness looking at families played underneath the trees. Happiness seeing children tried to make money by singing to tourists.
Travel is more than time off – it’s time quite well spent. Travel allows for time to self-reflect or to ponder deeper thoughts. Experiencing other cultures has grown my love of humanity, writ large.
Changing mental gears, enjoying outstanding food, culture, and music … Mexico is a well-rounded and gratifying destination. I was able to reconnect with myself because I was able to immerse myself in my experiences and surroundings. Those simplest things in life have made me feel alive again.
